Illegal Immigrant Students Protest at McCain Office By: Julia Preston

Just yesterday, Monday May 17th, five immigrant students held a sit-in protest at John McCain's office in Arizona. They were protesting against the fact that they were threatened to be deported back to their home countries. Three of the protestors were illegal immigrants who had tresspassed therefore they might be deported. The immigrants were atteneding schools within the country and had paid for tuition. They were on their way to obtaining a degree until recently when John McCain had changed his position on the Dream Act. The Dream Act is a bill that would help support illegal immigrant students to remain in the country to complete their schooling and obtain a degree despite the fact that they might be in this country illegally. The students held the protest in hopes to bring back attention to this problem as well as the new Arizona law that had been set in place. The new law allows police force to "randomly" select people in the public and check for legal residency by checking identification. Students as well as many other people within the public, mainly illegal immigrants, are against this new law because they fear it might bring about racial profiling.

The article itself is not meant to argue for a certain side but instead to address a controversial issue. The subject though is hugely controversial because it is discussing points about illegal immigration and deporting students of illegal immigrants or is one. The article is very recent, since it just occurred yesterday afternoon. It consists of facts of recent immigration laws that have been set in place as well as future outlooks into where immigration control is leading to. The article is from the New York Times so it reaches to a huge variety within the public, such as politicians, adults, lawyers, students etc. I believe that the author addresses the issue within a reasonable tone to state the issue but not take sides.

Even though this article is not meant for "taking sides," the issue itself clearly presents itself as to either supporting one side or the other. I am firmly on the side believing that illegal immigration is a HUGE problem. It has gotten way out of hand and needs to be controlled. I feel really angry that these illegal immigrants believe that they can just come into the country and go into our schools and learn. Do they not realize that it is us, the TRUE citizens of the United States paying for their illegal education with our hard earned tax money??? The U.S. has become too lenient with immigration laws. True people such as my mother had to wait almost 10 years to obtain her true citizenship and these illegal immigrants today think that they can just walk in and get a citizenship or use the benefits of being an American citizen just because they go to school here? I agree completely with the new Arizona law that allows police to check for identification. There is nothing wrong with checking a person if they are a legal citizen. People need to understand that the state is only doing this to protect our own citizens from having to pay for these illegal people who are stealing from us!!!! The cold fact is, what people are pretty much agreeing to right now about the new Arizona law, is that you are letting the thief (illegal immigrant) steal from you openly and then protecting them! How ridiculous is that???

I truly believe that the U.S. needs to enforce stricter laws to deal with illegal immigration because if something isn't done soon, we might as well just put up a huge sign around our borders saying "Come on in whenever you like to reap the benefits of being a U.S. citizen even if you're not one!"

Who can resist TAIWAN commercials??

Everyday during the evening, I sit down on my comfy fuji sofa to watch some good T.V. Five minuetes later, those darn commercials pop on and my whole evening goes down the drain.

No offense to American T.V., but whoever creates the commercials are not very good at keeping the consumer's attention, at least mines anyways. The subjects of the commercials are so narrow that it comes down to either being about the newest car model or the next lineup of drugs.

I cannot tell you how many times on ABC network itself that I have seen the Cialis commercial that discusses every couple to "be ready when they want to be" or "when the moment is right, they will be too." It is appauling that they play this not just a couple times during one half-hour time slot but several to a point where I have memorized the commercial.

How many times do I need to say this: I am not interested in increasing my sex life!

I think that people nowadays in the American commercial business need to take a look at other countries commercial designs. I say turn their heads and watch Taiwan commercials.

Not only are they full of life and cheerful, the commercials are cute, informative, and short to the point. Every time I go back to Taiwan, I look forward to the endless hours of just simply watching Taiwan commercials. I could never get sick of them.

Overall, the New York Times website, in which I found this article, is highly credible. This site provides all the links and information to prove its credability as a reliable resource to refer to. The New York Times is a very well-known newspaper company that has a world-wide known reputation. It has plently of resources that the authors use to compile their articles and go through revision processes to put together the most accurate data. With that in mind, it increased my trust in using this place as an information gateway.

The article I specifically chose provides a good deal of information that has been pulled from several places. His article includes a number of "audiences" to provide opinion, facts, statistics, etc. such as politicians, young adults, reseachers and parents. So it wasn't aimed at just one group but many. The background of the author is also provided as well as email.

I trust this website since not only does it come from a well-known company but the author put together the article very well with plenty of information.

Thesis Statement

Texting on a cellular device has become a huge distraction for people while they are operating a vehicle. In response to this increasing problem, the U.S. law system should communicate with cell phone companies in the coming months to restrict the service of texting while drivers are operating a vehicle on the road, for example companies create cell phones that have a sensor that will only allow calling while people are driving.

No More Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus would be better out of this world in my opinion. This is based on the fact that she has influenced so many young girls, and not just middle school girls, but very young girls in the age range younger than 5 to dress and talk in ways they shouldn't necessarily be at that age. She dresses in a fashion that strips the young girls of today from their innocence. There are five year olds that I see walking around the store wearing such as high heels that they can barely get around. They are carrying purses and even cell phones around because they saw Miley or "Hannah" do it on TV. The dresses and shirts they wear are revealing parts of their bodies that shouldn't be seen in public such as short skirts and fish net leggings. I know that dressing is a a personal opinion and expression but at that age dressing like that? There are still lines that exist at that age and Miley Cyrus has erased them all. She portrays a bad example to young girls because she didn't even finish school and instead dropped out to pursue her singing career and "acting" career. There are may singers out there who are drop outs but the difference is that the majority of Miley Cyrus's fans have only begun school and now their biggest role model is influencing them to skip school and pursue something else! I feel like Miley Cyrus is one big fake image that little girls need to stay away from.

If Miley Cyrus was gone from this planet, I know that there would be a huge population of little girls that would be dressed more appropriately and acting their age. The five and six year old girls would be playing with dolls and not worrying about cell phones and if their skirt makes them look weird. They wouldn't be associating with boys already and would be out having fun. Parents wouldn't be spending thousands of dollars to go to a ridiculous concert. Little girls can finally choose who they want to be and not the girl on the television screen. Children can learn to develop their own being and not be another "Disney reality star" that acts so fake.

Overall, I believe that children need to find themselves and Disney needs to stop putting up all these reality shows that portrays a person as how a typical girl/boy should be. As an older person, I know what not to follow because I have grown through experiences but these children aren't even being given that opportunity since all they can learn from is what's on the TV and be someone fake like Miley Cyrus.

Possible Research Topics

1.) Abortion

This topic is probably much more meaningful to me since I am a girl but it could be equally important to a guy as well. I do not agree with some people today saying that a woman cannot have full right in deciding whether she wants to keep her baby or not. It should always and fully be the woman who is bearing the child to say if she wants to keep it or not. It is ironic how most people on the side of pro-life are men or women who have never been raped or sexually assaulted resulting in a unplanned child. I am fairly confident that if they were in that situation, they would be fully on the side of pro-choice.

2.) War in Iraq

This is a very sensitive topic and I only choose it because I feel that it needs to end. The war has been going on for much longer than it needs to be and what has it accomplished? Let's review, the U.S. economy has pit fallen to a point where the U.S. dollar is now worth less than the Canadian dollar, hundreds if not thousands of families have lost their children who are serving in the war, the U.S. is in such a debt that we probably won't be able to ever pay back, and just to add to the topping the Al Qaeda are still out there causing havoc everyday. Have we really solved anything? I do not think so.

3.) Incorporating Language in U.S. schools

I know that immigration is higher than ever in the U.S. these days, but I feel that it should not mean that we have to shape the country to fit them. My parents were immigrants and came to the U.S. in the 80's, yet they had to find it in their own determination and hard work to fit in the economy. Nowadays, with so many translations and benefits, immigrants don't even have to lift a finger. It really upsets me that there are language translations in public school textbooks. If you come to America, you should learn to read and write English.

4.) Texting while driving

Now my opinion may be a bit controversial to most people my age probably because I don't drive or text that much. But, even so, I still don't believe that people should be allowed to text and drive at the same time. Is there really that much to say to a friend in the span of driving to the grocery store? Is it really worth taking your eyes off the road and endangering hundreds of other lives just to tell somebody that joke you heard earlier that day? Why can't people wait until they are out of the car and out of harm's way to text? I don't agree at all why people should be able to text in the car while driving.

Say NO to gun company CORRUPTION!

Capitalism is a great opportunity that the U.S. offers for its citizens. Free enterprise, control of your business, and your company is open to the free market. Nowadays though, money has clouded the judgement of too many CEO's of those companies. They are abusing the system that the U.S. created for the benefit of the whole public.

Now those CEO's are narrowing that "whole" public to their own little circle so that they are the only ones that can control the market.

I hope that the outcome of the trial is that the gun company pays for what they helped contribute to.

The judicial system of America needs to stand up against these power-hungry and greedy owners. These irresponsible owners need to get a wake up call and realize that they alone cannot control what happens. Now, I do not believe entirely that they are responsible for the death of those people, I am against how the gun companies are manipulating the way the trial is being taken. Those sort of actions of making the judging environment go towards a certain side is wrong. Trials that are being judged need to be created to be as fair as possible.

So, I want the outcome for the gun company to lose.

Am I Garfield the fat, orange cat?

We all have someone that we can relate to but how about a fat, orange, comic- strip cat called Garfield? Whether the person or character acts, thinks, or even dresses like you, there is that connection between you two that makes it more special. It can help a person feel like they are not alone in a situation and give them a boost in confidence. Garfield may be an average, fat, orange- striped cat and I may be just another person dealing with common struggles, yet we both still manage to find the joy and entertainment of everyday life.

Who doesn't love food? But I feel that Garfield and I share a common aspect on this subject. Food is not only a necessity of life but as a love for life. Food finds a way to never let a person down.

Lasagna, ice cream, donuts, Jon's dinner, and coffee are just a few foods on Garfield's infinite list of the foods he loves. He always starts the day off with a large breakfast that he labors on Jon to make for him. Mealtimes are always followed with a relaxing nap in the sun.

As for me, it really depends on the "season" to dictate what foods I will absolutely crave over like summer times call for shaved ice and iced bubble tea. In general though, put a plate in front of me with food and I will love you with never-ending passion.

No matter what background a person comes from; food finds a way to please anyone. It could just be a simple Thanksgiving dinner made by Jon's ecstatic grandma or a weekday night dinner with just me and my mom. Yet, an element of joy can be found within every experience with food such a funny, Kodak picture- perfect face when a food brings out a surprised result. Food discovers a way to help end a down kind of day into a day that just got a little more interesting.

In the end, Garfield and I know that food is filled with plenty of surprises that turn every average day into an adventurous day.

A Cook Makes, a Thief Takes

If I had to create a bumper sticker that modeled my philosophy for life, it would be "A Cook Makes, a Thief Takes." The meaning behind this phrase is a person needs to create their own goals in life and not take the ones of others. There is no harm in receiving the input of other people's opinions in deciding on a goal to have, but in the end, the ultimate decision comes down to you.

Throughout our lives, we are constantly being guided by others. They could be parents, teachers, friends, relatives, and even peers. Constant influence of thoughts and actions are shaping the way we think and what we want to do in life. Sometimes people can get lost in all that advice.

Yet, we all reach a certain point in life where it is time to decide where we want to go in our life. At that point, there is not always someone there to point us in the right direction. That is the time to get creative and intuitive. This is a daily situation that chefs across the world come across. Critics are always looking for that new flavor; that zest that makes that dish that more appealing to the taste buds.

A chef cannot simply take an idea from another chef and add it to their dish. Where's the creativity in that? How can that chef say that the inspiration from that dish came from deep inside when in reality, they simply "borrowed" it from another recipe?

Recipes are just like goals in life. A person can go about a similar area like chicken, beef, or stew but what about the specific ingredients like amount of salt, spice, and water? That is for the chef to decide. That is what makes life interesting and worth living. A thief will always have a deep feeling inside that this is not theirs to call their own. A goal that was never their own to call.

Life calls for your own thinking; your own recipe. Be a good chef and inspire that one awe-inspiring recipe because in the end, it is you who has to live the recipe.
